Malaysia Financial Breakdown

It is that time again! Here is what we spent on living expenses during out 40 day stay in Malaysia!

Here was our apartment in Malaysia! We stayed here from February 20th to April 1st, and our total bill came out to $977.47. Our apartment included all utilities, internet, an awesome roof-top swimming pool, gym, and sauna. Here is a look at it:

To be honest, it was not the cleanest apartment when we checked in, but we cleaned it up the next day, and were fairly happy with it after that!

As for transportation costs, our flight from Phuket was $48.48 each (totaling $96.96). We did not have a vehicle while in Kuala Lumpur, so we relied on walking and Grab (the Southeast Asian version of Uber). Over the entire month, we spent $149.73 on Grab rides (including the Grabs to and from the airport).

We did have a slight increase in monthly expenses this month, as we had to purchase health insurance. As we explained here, our credit card provided us health insurance for the first 60 days of travel, but after that we were on our own! Thus, we purchased traveler's insurance that provides us insurance in the countries that we will be visiting. The plan we chose costs $45.10 per person per month.

Here is the breakdown:

Rent and Utilities: $977.47
Transportation: $246.69
Insurance: $90.20

Total: $1,314.36

If you are keeping track, that means that from the start of our round-the-world trip on January 14th until April 1st, we've spent a total of $2,788.32 on living expenses. As explained here, we were averaging around $4,000.00 PER MONTH in living expenses in Los Angeles, so if we were still in L.A., we would have spent nearly $10,000.00 in the same amount of time. Thus, we saved over $7,000.00 on living expenses as of April 1st!

We have since moved on to more expensive countries, and we did have an expensive travel debacle on our way out of Malaysia, so this dramatic difference will shrink, but we are excited to see that our plans with respect to financial planning are working!

Until next time! :)
