Thailand Financial Breakdown
As I mentioned in this post, we are trying to keep our living expenses (rent, electricity and other utilities, internet, transportation, and insurance) as low as possible during our travels. Our goal was to keep these expenses below $20,000.00 for the year, or approximately $1,700.00 per month. Thus, I will update this for each of our destinations to see if we can manage to stay below this threshold!
Transportation:
Our flight from Tokyo to Thailand, with a stopover in Singapore was $132.00 each ($264.00 total).
Our transport from the airport to our apartment was 700 baht ($22.06).
As explained above, our scooter was included in the price of our apartment, which really cut down on our transportation costs! For the entire trip, we spent approximately 180 baht ($5.67) on gas for the scooter.
If you remember from this post, our costs in Los Angeles were totaling approximately $4,000.00 per month for these expenses, so we were under our California budget by almost $3,200.00!!
Because I didn't do a breakdown for Tokyo, I figured I would just add it up here to get up to date! Here are our expenses since we left the U.S.:
Rent and Utilities: $341.74 (including 5 nights in Tokyo, and one night in Singapore)
Transportation: $315.00 (including flights from Los Angeles, transport to and from the airport, and subway money).
Insurance: $0.00
Total: $656.74
Thus, the total we've spent thus far on living expenses during our round-the-world trip is: $1,473.96
As for food expenses, our food budget really remains the same no matter where we are (between $400-$500 per month). We also have a budget for activities, but that will fluctuate depending on how well the business is doing. We are perfectly happy just doing free and low-cost activities, such as walking around, swimming/snorkeling in the ocean or swimming in our apartment pools (where available), working out, hiking, and visiting free and low-cost sites such as temples, museums, and aquariums. However, if we decide to splurge on something, such as scuba diving lessons, a motorcycle race, or Oktoberfest (hopefully more on this to come!), then we will do so if the time and money is right! :)
We will update you all again once we leave Malaysia!
Much love,
Cole and Michelle
So this is our apartment in Phuket, Thailand! We stayed here from January 23rd through February 20th (28 nights), and our total bill came out to $506.58. We were also lucky enough to find an apartment that included a scooter, so we also had much of our transportation costs included in this price! Our apartment also included all utilities, including internet.

Finally, our transportation back to the airport at the end of our stay was 600 baht ($18.91)
For the time that we were in Thailand, we didn't need to purchase extra health insurance because we were covered under our credit card for our first 60 days of travel, so we did not have any extra insurance costs. So that is it for our living expenses! Here is the breakdown:
Rent and Utilities: $506.58
Transportation: $310.64
Insurance: $0.00
Total: $817.22
